We would like to introduce two new additions to our design team.

"Princess" - resides in Memphis, TN where she works as a trainer for Porter-Leath. She's a Scrapbook Addict and refuses help! It all started at a Creative Memories class in 1996, and in 2000 she became a Creative Memories consultant for one year. Because she gave away more than she sold, she got out of the business. She then decided to teach classes and have scrapbook parties of all ages. Oh what fun! She also formed a scrapbook club called Queen Scrappers. Each of them had their our own favorite niche and her's was the Queen of mini albums. It’s true…a scrapbook is a present you open again and again and again! She loves sharing her gift. In 2008 she wrote a scrapbook prayer after attending a scrapbook convention where she went over her budget!! She has met so many wonderful friends through this stress-free hobby and appreciate the opportunity to be a part of Platinum Scraps Design Team. What an honor!

"Keandra" - Hey, I'm Keandra Perkins-Willis...wife, stay at home mother and artist located in New Orleans, LA...home of the SUPERBOWL SAINTS! I started crafting when I was five and drew on my bedroom wall with a purple crayon. My parents kind of stifled my artistry for a few years (at least until I learned to draw on paper ONLY!) When I was 12, I was given my first sticky backed photo album and I've been hooked ever since! I love looking back at my old pages. I love to see how far I've advanced; I love to see the different styles I've incorporated over the years. My grandfather died of Alzheimer's and I think all the time that I may be afflicted with that same disease one day. So, my memory keeping has a twofold purpose: I want to preserve our life experiences for future generations and also for me in case there is a time when I DON'T remember.

The original project was ok according to the sketch, but that white space (empty space) at the top was bothering me. I decided to go in cut a branch and add a monkey. It instantly transformed a good layout to a better layout. I came back and added a branch to the other side of the layout for balance and added ribbon to each photo mat.

Faux Metal Layout

I am so excitied about the newest layout techinique I learned.at the local scrap store Treasured Memories in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is a technique called "Faux Metal". You use foil tape, chipboard, metal distressing tools, and your imagination. I will upload a video in the near future demonstrating the process to create your very own metal page.

The key to this technique is building your chipboard images. Lot's and lot's of layers.

I made the following pages for my dad's album. These are pictures of us at the restaurant while watching the Saints game on Super Bowl Sunday and the other photo is the next day waiting for the team to land at the airport.

Believe you me, the camera does not do this technique justice.

A New Year and A New Team

Not really a new team, just a new way of doing what we love. Our team went on a mini break to decide how we could better showcase our work. Many of us felt that we did certain projects better than others. With that said, we have created teams within the team. Each team will feature projects each month, but Team A will spotlight layouts and Team B will spotlight cards. We will alternate weeks and on the months that have five Monday's, we will showcase a free for all.

Just as a teaser for what's to come, we are showcasing a project from CraftinCurt. Look forward to team projects next Monday.

Time Out Thursday: Using Clip Art Images On Cards & Layouts

A lot of us use different types of rubber or acrylic stamps as images when we are making cards. We also search online for digital stamps which are sometimes cheaper and take up much less space the craft room.

Have you ever tried using coloring pages or clip art for your cards? Clip art images and coloring pages are easy to use, make wonderful cards and best of all, they are free to use (Make sure they are Royalty-free). There are thousands of images online and can be a great source if you’re looking for something different for your card, scrapbook page or paper crafts. For those who are into Copics, coloring pages are good images to practice on, since they are not as detailed as some of the rubber and acrylic stamps. Here are a few cards I made using coloring pages I found online.

I used colored pencils and gamsol on all my cards.

Time Out Thursday: Bookmark

Hi all! It's Thursday and I have a small little project for you. This project was inspired by my friend Kelli over at Scraps of Color....thanks Kelli!!
This is a "child friendly" bookmark. At first, I didn't know where to go with it....or what dimentions to use. So, I used one of my children's old bookmarks and kind of went from there. These can be made in a variation of colors and styles. Enjoy!

Here is the recipe:

6x3 piece of cardstock
eyelets (as many as you desire)
coordinating ribbon
images/Cricut cuts (whatever you like!) I used the "Create-a-Critter" cartridge
coordinating paper to go with your images
adhesive (I used Scotch ATG glue gun)
For the face, I used Peach Keen animal stamp set

Now...lets put it together!

If you are using a scrap piece of card stock, cut it at 6x3
Score 3" side @ 1 1/2 Fold at score line and glue shut. It's better to use a glue runner for this.
I cut the monkey @ 1" from Create-a-Critter and the vine @ 2" (for the length) from Create-a-Critter as well. You don't have to use this image...go with what you like!
BEFORE YOU PUT ON THE IMAGES OR CUTS....use your eyelet setter and place your eyelets in place at the top of your bookemark. This way, you will know where to put your image/cut on the bookmark!
Glue your image or cut onto the bookmark as desired
Lastly, attach your ribbons

Voila!!! You can give your child/friend/neighbor or anyone who likes to read...their own personal bookmark!

Time Out Thursday: Custom Papers

This week's TOT comes from Craftin' Curt:

I love patterned paper and find that sometimes, I just can't find or even buy what I want. I also like inking my work to create dimension, but words and letters can sometimes be a pain to do. Well, this super simple and super inexpensive technique helps me solve both of my problems and inspires me with new ideas every time I do it.

YOU WILL NEED:

Watercolor Paper

Food Coloring

1. Thoroughly wet the watercolor paper in the sink. It should be fairly sot when completely wet. Sit paper, textured side up in the bottom of the sink.

2. Using food coloring, apply drops of color to the paper in any combination you desire. It helps to swirl the coloring around the wet paper to promote blending. For pops of unblended color, don't swirl.

3. Remove paper from sink and place on paper towels to allow color to soak into paper. To achieve pastel colors, only allow to soak for 5 minutes and then rinse under lukewarm water. For darker colors, allow longer. This is also the point at which the color can be manipulated using combs, paper towels, etc. Just be creative.

After excess liquid has been absorbed.

4. After you notice that there is little or no excess liquid on top of the paper, allow it to hang dry until stiff again and enjoy it!
*I've also tried this with liquid dyes and it works just as well, if not better. The paper will really soak up the color and wick it into the entire thickness.

I love the watercolor effect I can achieve with this technique because it cuts down on my inking when cutting words! It also creates unique card bases, water or sky backgrounds, and fun clothing for dressing up those paper dolls. The best thing is, you'll always get different patterns and results each time you do it!

Faux Wind/Pin Wheel Video Tutorial

Hello Friends. On Wednesday night, we got a call saying can someone post a Time Out Thursday. I hurriedly replied sure I can because I knew exactly what I had in mind to post. I made my layout last week featuring my granddaugther Kennedi and how she blows my mind with the things she does. I made some wind/pin wheels as a spin on the word blown. I was gong ho about this video. It is my second one and I would be demonstrating a technique that I love.

Anyway, long story short, I was able to call PkaySunshine and ask her to help me upload the video. She said sure no problem. Then she calls back and says "T, it's not complete." Oh no. That equalled to no Time Out Thursday. So blame it on video error that was created by user error. Anyway, here is the video on Friday for Time Out Thursday. We shall pretend that it is Thursday.

Time Out Thursday...Creating a Logo in Microsoft Word

Happy Thursday Fellow Crafters. One thing I learned several years ago is the fact that I needed more time to learn proper stamping techniques. I gave up then but now I'm back and still learning. Besides, stamps are so much cuter now than they were 8 years ago. Most of the time when I create cards, it's always an order for 25 or more. Because I'm the not the neatest stamper, I needed a way to add my logo to the back of my cards and do it rather quickly. In comes my faithful stand-by... Microsoft Word. If you've every watched a Cassie video, you know I love using Word as a quick work around.

Scraplifting

SCRAPLIFTING. When I first started scrapping and I heard this term I immediately thought it was a negative thing. How is it OK for someone to steal your ideas? Of course I was educated that it is not only OK, but often encouraged. Immitation is the best form of flattery. Why not "lift" my card or layout? If others think my work is so amazing that they want to duplicate it, I find that great....I even blush at the thought. Crafters everywhere often lift ideas from others that it is often hard to determine where the original idea came from. The main rule of scraplifting is that you do not take credit for the idea. As long as you are not publishing your work as your own, its OK. So I decided to scraplift. Oh, I have done it many times in the past but I wanted to make a few cards that show different levels of lifting. I used the latest issue of Cards Magazine to do my crime.

When I saw this card I really liked the tag with the sentiment. It inspired me to make my card. As you can see my card and the lifted card are not similiar at all. The only thing I took from this card is the tag.

Now this card I lifted completly. I had some foam thickers laying around and when I saw this card I had to try to follow it as much as possible. I would have even rounded my corners had I not stuck the thickers on first.

Happy New Year fellow crafters. Welcome to 2011! We hope everyone had a Scraptastic 2010. The Platinum Scraps Designers look forward to sharing more Layouts, Cards, Altered Items, Recipes and more with you, this year. And just the same, we want to see what you create using the sketches we post.

2011 Desk Calendars

Our very own Leialoha designed these calendars for friends during the holidays. They are absolutely beautiful. She has included a supply list, tool list, and step by step instructions.

Leialoha created pdf files for the calendars. Just click on the link below, it takes you to the scribd account. Once there click download. A regular pdf comes up and allows you to print the calendars.

Supplies Needed:
(1) 12X12 heavy duty chip board
(2) 12X12 pieces of printed paper (cardstock weight is better)
24" piece of ribbon (you can use more than one piece)
(4) eyelets
(1) large brad
(1) Tom Holtz - swivel clasps (optional) this is what I use to hold the charm
(1 or 2) charms (I used Making Memories embossed charm or charms from the hand made jewerly section in Michaels)

Tools:
heavy duty paper cutter (for chip board)
paper trimmer
Crop-a-dile
Crop-a-dile (big bite)
Crop-a-dile corner chomper or BIA corner punch (anything that you can use on the heavy duty chip board
Chestnut Chalk (color is optional)
Adhesive

Instructions:
1. Cut - chip board and PP (6 1/2 X 4 1/2)
2. Glue paper on the front and back of each piece of chip board
3. Round the corners with the corner punch
4. Chalk all sides
5. Using the crop-a-dile punch a whole on each side
6. Punch holes 1" from the top and 1" from the sides
7. Fasten your eyelets in the holes
8. Using the crop-a-dile big bite, punch a whole on the front board "only"
      punch the hole in the middle about 2" from the top
9. Using your ribbon tie the two covered chip boards together
      leaving a little room for it to open and sit upright
10. Put the clasp on the ribbon on any corner and let it hang
       add the charm to the bottom of the clasp
11. Add your calendar with your large brad to the hole you punched in the middle of the chip board
12. Cut your calendars at 4 1/2 X 4

December Layout Challenge Week 1 "Three B's"

Happy December! We at Platinum Scraps would like to say a warm hello to Myra Mierria, our guest designer for December! HI Myra!!!

Myra lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her family and is a working mom and business owner. She’s been scrapbooking and paper crafting since 2004 and enjoys learning new techniques and sharing her creations with her family and friends. For two years, she taught and designed for a local scrapbook store until it closed in August of this year. She also designs for her favorite challenge blog, Glue, Scissors, Paper, which is on an indefinite hiatus. She uses some of her precious vacation time to travel to paper arts events around the country. A long time fan of Platinum Scraps and its awe inspiring creations, Myra is honored to be this month’s guest designer!

The first challenge for this month was a recipe. Each designer had free reign to create any type of project but whatever the project, it had to follow the recipe.

Happy Thanksgiving

I am so glad that we as a design team can celebrate our first Thanksgiving with all of you. Wow, time has flown by. Many of us have traveled or will be traveling over the weekend to spend the holiday with our family and friends. We pray for your continued safety as you travel to and fro.

This week our challenge focused on what we are thankful for. As you are feasting today, reflect on the things you have to be thankful for.

Don't eat to much but do enjoy. Again, Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours.

Saturday Surprise - "F" is for Family

A few weeks ago, I did a video for Time Out Thursday on making your own 3-D embellishments. I had originally created this layout for our fall challenge but due to time, did not meet the deadline. I then decided to go ahead and make layouts for each of my children with the photos but make each one unique.

These are pictures we took the weekend of my daughter's birthday. All of the embellishements were created using my cricut and foam tape. I am including my 12 X 12 layout and an 8 X 8 layout that will go in my daughter's book. You may visit my blog later to view the three different layouts created for my children.

This week, the designers took on a Color Challenge. The instructions were:

Can be Halloween or Fall themed. Card or layout. Project has to have fall colors: orange, brown, black, yellow. Note: Don't have to use all colors but you should be able to see the fall colors in the project.

These cards were to inspire a team member's daughter that yes, she could make it thru basic training. The butterflies were actually demonstrated earlier in a going green tutorial on recycling your cartridge holders to make beautiful projects.

Sometime life does interfer and we can't always meet project deadlines no matter how hard we try. I was pleasantly surprised to see how Shelly transformed the metallic(not acutally but resembles) looking paper in the Basic Grey Vagabond line and used it to make this nice layout for her hubby using the Cricut Cartridge HandyMan.

TOT: Go-to Embellishments

This week's TOT comes from Craftin' Curt. In his own words, he shares his 5 favorite go-to embellishments for those times when he is "less than inspired" and needs that extra touch to complete a project.

FLOWERS

Flowers always seem to help me out in a pinch. I try to keep a variety on hand at all times- layering types, rhinestoned, patterned- so that I can add a little unexpected interest in addition to solving design problems or mistakes. When layering, use dimensional foam to create some depth.

CHIPBOARD DIE CUTS

To be absolutely honest, I really did not take to these when I first came across them. I thought them to be pointless. Months later, I saw some on clearance and decided to open my mind to them. Now, I absolutely love them. They can be easily colored using inks or markers in a variety of ways. My favorites are the mini frames because they're so versatile.

HOTFIX RHINESTONES

I began using these about 5 or 6 years ago....for professional tutus. I used the ones made by Swarovski and they were (and still are) an easy way to decorate a full tutu without all of the hand sewing or messy glues. Once I began crafting, my rhinestone collection quickly dwindled as I found that they are perfect for cards and layouts. The hotfix glue is super strong-once you put it down, it's there for good! The heat tool isn't necessary (an iron will work) but the interchangeable tips to fit a multitude of rhinestone sizes makes the heat tool a smart purchase.

SMOOCH INKS & SOUFFLE PENS

I lumped these two together because they serve the same purpose for me- detail & accents. Smooch Inks have a fine-tip brush built into the cap which enables you to use it much like nail polish. It comes in a variety of colors with a slightly metallic look to them. Souffle Pens create the look of heat- embossing without the powder or heat! You have to draw fairly slowly with them, but once dry the ink puffs up slightly and adds interest and texture.

TOT: Customizing Yourstory Book Covers

This week's TOT comes courtesy of Curt. His video details how to create a custom book cover to use in the Yourstory machine. While this project isn't for the faint of heart, Curt simplifies the process and shows that it's very attainable for both the beginner or seasoned crafter. The sample project even uses what he calls The Quad-fecta: Yudu, Yourstory, Cricut and Cuttlebug!
